Province Supports VCBC Exemption

With no warning, the Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General, Mike Farnworth, has written to the City of Victoria to acknowledge that the Province of B.C. has contacted Health Canada to “encourage exploration of a licence that could allow VCBC to continue providing certain services.”  This comes 2 months after the Community Safety Unit raided the club for the second time in the last 10 months, though the organization reopened the doors of its facilities the day after each time.  The letter is a response to a letter written by the mayor and council in January after the first raid.

The club has been preparing to submit an application to Health Canada and plans on having the letters of support and affidavits sent off next month.  While the process to obtain an exemption for Health Canada is unclear, with the guidance of our legal counsel, JFK Law Corporation, we intend on providing a complete package of information that will make it easy for Health Canada to justify allowing us to transition into the legal system in a way that best suits the organization and its patients.  There is an article explaining how we intend on preparing for the exemption on the Cannabis Digest at

This letter sets a path forward for the club to survive, though there are still many questions to be answered.  For now we are very happy to receive this news late on a Friday and more reports about how this process is unfolding will be released in the future.

The Victoria Cannabis Buyers Club would like to sincerely thank everyone who has helped advocate for us during these difficult days.  We would also like to extend a huge thank you to Mike Farnworth, John Horgan, Carol James and the rest of the BC government.  Together we will make cannabis legalization function in ways that truly makes the world envious.
